What are the characteristics of a berry?

Everyone knows that a tomato is scientifically a fruit, not a vegetable, because it carries its seeds.

But I've recently been told that a kiwi is classified as a berry. So my question is, what makes a berry a berry? What do you look for when you're wondering if something is a berry?

  1. Maybe the way they grow.  Also they are all very high in antioxidants and preventing free radicals in the body which helps to keep us healthy.

    Kiwis have seeds.

    Berries are often in the red/purplish/blue families & so attractive to animals who spread their seeds.  They are fleshy fruits that contain multiple seeds

  3. A berry is a fleshy or pulpy fruit with the seed(s) embedded in the fleshy tissue. Kiwi is a fruit scientifically just as all berries are. Kiwi contain hundreds of seeds. The tiny black specs you see in the kiwi are sterile seeds.
