What are the characteristics of musical theatre?

i really think that the characterisics are things like they are cheesy.......   musical makers what them to be cheesey because that will mean the songs etc will stick it veiwers heads meaning that they might discuss the musical they might recommend the musical or they might buy the dvd or want to come back to watch it again ....... all resulting in more money :)   this is what my teacher told me :)  hahha
