  1. Changing your diet... Its FREE

  2. There are a lot of drugs (antihypertensives) on the market today that can effectively lower blood pressure.  Many of the older generic ones have become much more cost effective, due largely in part to the number of pharmacies (i.e. WalMart, Krogers, et al,) that are selling many for $4 a month.

The real issue has more to do with the appropriate CHOICE of the blood pressure medication.

Most first-line medications that we use today will likely be on the low-end of the cost scale.  These would include: diuretics or ACE inhibitors as common first-line agents.  Calcium channel blockers & beta-blockers are not typically used first line, but if they were, it would be more aimed towards co-conditions (i.e. tachycardia).  If you have a more aggressive or extremely HIGH blood pressure, then the prescriber may use something a bit more potent, but may still be generic and likely cheaper than a name-brand.

I always encourage my patients to discuss affordability with me, as I believe it is an essential part of keeping compliance.  There are those who can afford a $40 co-pay for their medicines every month, and those who can barely afford $10/month.  There are plenty of good medications that will be cheap, but the most important part is -- making sure they are effective!

    Best of luck to you!

  3. there are a vast number of low priced effective medications for hypertension.  which one is used depends on a huge number of variables in your over all health status.  Just as an example, if someone is diabetic, they should not take beta blocker drugs because those are very hard on the kidneys, and they are at risk in any diabetic.

there are a great many other health issues that a doctor must take in consideration before prescribing a particular drug...so in this case, you have to ask your doctor.
