If I remember correctly, indigo was omitted.

  3. Im pretty sure this question asks why are the colors of the rainbow not what. In that case, colors of the rainbow are produced when total internal reflection occurs in the droplets of rain. When a droplet of rain falls, light enters it and is seperated into diffrent wavelengths namly the visable light electromagnetic radiation part. The light must enter the droplet at a certain angle of incidence so instead shinning straight through (clear) -what we would normally see, its is trapped inside -rebounding many times before exiting. So imagine a Sun at an angle 30o to the horizon, hitting a droplet of rain, as the droplet fall it is at a diffrent angle of incidence relative to the sun, producing diffrent colors untill it falls so low that it becomes clear again.

  5. A rainbow is an arch of light exhibiting the spectrum colors in their order, caused by drops of water falling through the air. It is seen usually in the sky opposite to the sun at the close of a shower and also in the spray of waterfalls. In the brightest or primary bow, often the only one seen, the colors are arranged with the red outside. Above the perfect bow is a secondary bow, in which the colors are arranged in reverse order; this bow is dimmer, because of a double reflection within the drops.

When the sunlight enters a raindrop it is refracted, or bent, by and reflected from the drop in such a way that the light appears as a spectrum of colors. The colors can be seen, however, only when the angle of reflection between the sun, the drop of water, and the observer's line of vision is between 40° and 42°.

When the sun is low in the sky the rainbow appears relatively high; as the sun rises higher, the rainbow appears lower in the sky, maintaining the critical 40°- to 42°-angle. When the sun is more than 42° above the horizon no rainbow can be seen because the required angle passes over the head of the observer.

Red is on the outside and violet is on the inside. Here's a link to a picture and breakdown of how it works.

    The Secondary Rainbow

Occasional when the sun is shining very brightly and the rain clouds are very dark a second much fainter rainbow will be seen above the normal or primary rainbow. Its colors are the reverse of the primary. They start with red on the inside and move to violet on the outside. The width of this bow is about twice the width of the primary bow.

It must be a clear and bright day to see the secondary rainbow. since it is at least a quarter as bright as the primary.

  6. You should know your colors!

  7. Rainbows are optical and meteorological phenomena that cause a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. They take the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outer part of the arch and violet on the inner section of the arch. More rarely, a secondary rainbow is seen, which is a second, fainter arc, outside the primary arc, with colours in the opposite order, that is, with violet on the outside and red on the inside.

A rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colours. Traditionally, however, the sequence is quantised. The most commonly cited and remembered sequence, in English, is Newton's sevenfold red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. "Roy G. Biv" and "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain" are popular mnemonics.

Rainbows can be caused by other forms of water than rain, including mist, spray, dew, fog, and ice. Moreover, rainbows can have shapes other than a bow (arc), including stripes, circles, or even flames. (See circumhorizontal arc).
