What are the combustion products from Butane with zero impurities after being burnt in:

A. A jet lighter (Blue flame, much hotter)

B. A Commercial, standard BIC lighter (More orange flame, cooler flame)

I'm talking in terms of what is released from the flame after the butane is burnt by these two manners, and I'm not wondering about quantity.

The reason I'm asking is because I operate a device which requires the user to inhale the products of flame from either of these lighters.

Thanks, Pleated.

  1. A jet lighter completely combusts the butane by adding extra air to the flame.  The products will overwhelmingly be carbon dioxide and water vapor.  There will be pretty much insignificant traces of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

A normal lighter, as evidenced by the orange flame, does not completely combust the butane.  The main products will still be carbon dioxide and water, but the additional products will be present in greater amounts.  Carbon particles (soot), carbon monoxide, and probably other organic molecules such as unburnt butane and maybe aldehydes, alcohols etc.

The fumes from the normal lighter will be more dangerous, but you should not breathe in gases from either unless they are diluted by a large volume of air.  People burn gas stoves, candles, bunsen burners and other such devices indoors routinely without problems.
