  1. Distance from home - unless you live in Asia or the Pacific then Australia is a long flight home (if you live in Europe or North America).

Much of the country is uninhabitated so the large majority of people live on the coast, particularly the East Coast.  This has lead to some very expensive properties in the major cities.

Often quite severe water shortages in the more extreme climates

Yes, there are snakes and bugs but not hugely worrying.

Now can I go through the positives? There are a LOT of positives. Australia is beautiful.

  2. You only want the cons?  I guess you have researched the pros!

    Cons:

Australia is overpriced in almost every way from property to food (especially fruit and vegetables - blame 'the drought') to petrol.  The cost of living can be very high, especially if you have children.  If you're thinking of buying property, the current interest rates make it almost impossible on a 'normal' salary, though there are plenty of jobs where people are making upwards of 130 000 dollars a year (the mines) - so they can afford it!  Lucky them!

The public transport systems leave a lot to be desired in some parts of some cities - and other cities have little or no public transport at all.

Australians can be (not all of them, but SOME) narrow minded when it comes to cultures of countries other than their own - and tend to group entire populations together  - e.g. Asians (ah...Asia is a big continent - can we really group the people of an entire continent together?? I don't think so.)

As you can see, there are some cons to living in Australia - but overall, I believe the pros far outweigh them.  I've lived in Australia for 24 years, lived in England for 5 years, and travelled 40+ other countries, so at least I have a fairly comprehensive perspective of life in a few other countries.  Australia is easy going, has a high rate of employment, spectacularly beautiful scenery & animals, and friendly locals.  If you lived here, you'd love it.

  3. LOL...

I've travelled a bit, and everytime I come home, I can't help but think I am truly very lucky to live here.

The con that I see is also the thing that keeps us a little unique... we are so far away from everyone else. In fact my best friend and I have never lived in the same city. Currently my best friends are living anywhere from 1000km to 3000kms from where I am...

  4. The hot weather, currently there's a heat wave in South Australia.

So really think about wether you like hot weather or not..

  5. Its a great place to live. No wars, no long drawn out political elections, we are a muliticultural society and we have our problems but I wouldn't live anywhere else. Summers are hot, Winter is cold ,Spring and Autumn are beautiful.Beaches great, even the deserts can be good using the right type of vehicles and equipement.Housing prices are steady but we are currently experiencing interest rate rises that are causing some problems for home buyers. We are not allowed to carry or have guns (criminal element excluded) and we have never to my knowledge had shootings in our schools. It not a perfect society but its close, but I guess i am biased.

  6. you may have to wait a few years for the best Broadway or West End shows to arrive but that just gives me another excuse to travel

  7. The island is mainly one big desert if you like the desert never mind about that.

  8. no george bush. enough said.
