  1. Most monarchies have turned into Constitutional Monarchies.  That is, democratic republics with a monarch as head of state but no legislative power.

One obvious exception is the US which turned into a non-monarchical Constitional state.  (President is head of state)

In today's day-and-age, monarchies eventually lose power.

  2. A monarchy is the most expensive of all forms of government, the regal state requiring a costly parade of public funds annually. Although most modern day sovereign nations are a "constitutional monarchy" with very limited powers, many monarchs actually do have certain served powers. The Royal Prerogative is a body of customary authority, privilege, and immunity, recognized in common law and, sometimes, in civil law jurisdictions possessing a monarchy as belonging to the King or Queen alone.

While prerogative powers were originally exercised by the monarch acting alone, and do not require parliamentary consent, they are now always exercised on the advice of the Prime Minister or the Cabinet, who is then accountable for the decision to Parliament. There may be situations in which the monarch could choose to exercise the Royal Prerogative without the advice of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

  3. It really depends on what kind of monarchy the country has. Some countries have constitutional monarchies, and others have absolute monarchies.

One consequence of having a constitutional monarchy is that the monarch has no say in what goes on in the governing of the country but they get paid millions for practically doing nothing whiles that money could be used for something more useful.

Consequences of an absolute monarchy could be that if the monarch is a bad leader, they could destroy the country, economically or financially and the citizens would suffer. But at the same time if an absolute monarch is good at ruling the country, it could be very successful and the citizens would have a high standard of living.
