  1. The Food and Drug Administration requires extensive testing before a medical device like a contact lens is approved to be used by the public. Contact lenses receive a rating,  2 weeks, 4 weeks, quarterly etc.

The rating indicates how long the lens retains moisture, transmits a sufficient amount of oxygen to the eye and resists debris and dirt from sticking to the lens and causing infection.

Milk and yogurt have expiration dates, too.  Would you use them after that date?

Using a lens longer than the safe FDA rating puts you at risk for suffocating your cornea or the possibility of infection.

A week over the safe 2 week ratingis really not bad, but 5 or 6 weeks risks permanent damage to the eyes.

  2. Probably nothing.  For many years I wore Acuvue lenses that were supposed to be good for one month's wear - either leaving them in or taking them out occasionally to lean.

I would often wear them for 8-10 weeks without taking them out at all - with no side effects aside from occasionally dry eyes.

    Your mileage may vary.

  3. well i have 2 week contacts 2 and i dont take them out at night and i leave them in for like 2 months at a time. lol i know its really bad for your eyes but oh well! Youll be fine dont worry! :)

  4. A week over every once in a while is not terrible, but if you do it chronically you run the risk of oxygen deprivation and infection.  Remember that bacteria can accumulate on a dirty lens, and seeing as they are living organisms, they create waste like we do.  The dirtier your lens, the more "waste" floating around in your eye.  Personally, I want a clean lens like I want clean underwear.......It's just gross otherwise!

  5. I'm really glad to hear you take them out everynight, just don't forget to rub them clean, no matter if it's "no rub" solution or not. The concern is that they may tear or split if worn beyond their "set" time. Also they could lose some of their oxygen permeability.

  6. i wear 2 week contacts for a month or two & it's fine!
