  1. In the primary grades, the major cause of discipline issues is usually fear based.  Generally a child is acting out because they are afraid of something and trying to cover it up.

This can show up in the ways that are disruptive - talking, teasing, being disrespectful, constantly getting up, bothering other students, etc.  It is often hard for a classroom teacher to get to the underlying fear right away, but if a child is constantly acting up, it can be helpful to get the parents and school social worker involved to see what the fear is.

Sometimes too, children with learning differences (either gifted or challenged) act out because they are afraid of failing.  Yes, even gifted children are afraid of failing - they fear that if they don't know something NOW and learn it easily, they shouldn't do it at all and won't try.  Children that have learning differences often won't try because they're afraid they'll look silly in front of their classmates.  In both of these situations children tend to act out to cover up a fear.

    Hope this helps!

  2. The other classmates laughing and reinforceing the one child that is misbehaving. That child seeks attention where if others don't find it entertaining the child would be so rowdy. My thoughts about children are that bad parenting is so very often that kids do become like this or even worse. Kids need boundaries.

  3. Discipline problems occur for many reasons - most behavior problems are caused by one of two things -

    1.  Avoidance - the child can not do or does not feel confident with the work at hand

    2.  Attention seeking - the child wants the attention of the teacher or his/her peers

The key to reducing or eliminating them is consistency.

A teacher must be consistent with the rules and consquences/rewards.

  4. 1. Attitude

    2. Health and emotional problems

    3. lack of respect

    4. lack of interest

    5. social problems
