In addition to what no. 1card posted... to control the game or match, you need to control your focus. Try not to get distracted by extraneous noises or conversations if it's an important match (as opposed to playing for fun).

Also, on the follow-through... a smooth stroke is doubly important if you intend to draw the cue ball back more than 12 to 15 inches. A herky-jerky punch may get the cue ball back a couple inches but not the two-feet you wanted it.
