  1. About Us

About the State Coroner's Office of Victoria.

The State Coroner's Office is responsible for investigating deaths where the circumstances are sudden, traumatic or unexplained.

Staff at the State Coroner's Office understand the impact this may have on family and friends. Their priority is to investigate the person's death sensitively and professionally, ever mindful of the dignity and privacy of the person who has died and respectful of the family's needs at all times.

Uncertainty about court procedures and what will happen during a Coronial Investigation into a loved one's death may add to a person's anxiety.

This website will provide information about the Victorian Coronial system, explain why the death has been reported to the State Coroner and the processes involved in the Coronial Investigation. It also provides information regarding available counselling services.

    The Coroner's Responsibility

Under the Coroner's Act 1985, when a death is reported, the coroner, who is usually a Magistrate, is required to find out:

    - the identity of the deceased

    - how death occurred (the circumstances)

    - the cause of death

    - the particulars needed to register the death.

In some cases the coroner may comment and make recommendations about public health or safety or the administration of justice. This helps prevent similar deaths happening.

There does not have to be anything suspicious about the death for the coroner to be involved. In fact, there are relatively few suspicious deaths in Victoria. Most investigations involve people who have died of natural causes.

    The Coroner's Process

The State Coroner has a legal responsibility to investigate certain deaths to find out what happened and why.

The coroner's investigation may assist in preventing other deaths.

This booklet, produced in conjunction with the Victorian State Coroner's Office and the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, aims to help the family and friends of a person whose death is reported to the coroner.

  2. Firstly the Coroner is not a medically person unlike what you see on American T.V. shows, In Australia the Coroner is a legally trained and is a Judge, his duties are to investigate the course of death of person(s) How, why, where and all other details he can recommand that a person stand trail if it is found that a persons death was caused by a individual or organisation etc, he can recommand a safety recall on products etc, and suggest improvements in work place safety. all this is done after he has heard evidence from witnesses police, fire service and anyone else. the Coroner also investigate things like arson, but only if it has caused damage to property which the damage is more $100,000 or somebody has been killed or seriouly injured. so he responsility in short is to hold a hearing at court, and make recommandations on his finding and judgements The Coroner has his own Court called the Coroners court he his a lot of power and is regarded as a higher judge than the normal court judge I hope this helps you. Derek Hand a form state Coroner has written a book about his work as the head of the N.S.W. Coroner Court it is worth a read
