For ex the Pony club manual states you use your right leg at the cinch while reining right . Others state you use your left leg at the cinch whle reining right. ??

  1. Hello...just reading all the confusion above.... I am a certified Riding Instructor and the traditional Western Neck Rein Leg Cue to move off into a "basic" turn is this....to turn "right" lay your rein on the left side of the neck into the direction you want to go without crossing over the withers and apply your left leg. Turn right, left leg. You are "pushing" your horse into the direction of the turn at the girth or slightly behind about an inch. Horses are to move away from pressure. Your leg is doing what your neck rein is doing.  Sequence is "look" into the direction you want to go. Apply your "leg" toward the direction and "rein" applied toward the direction. (Look-Leg-Rein) would be your cue for a turn. Then release all cues and straighten your focus into the new direction. You need to get a trainer for an hour and ask for a "leg cue" only session.  Advanced riders can use legs for a right turn but using both legs to mold the horses body, depending on what your asking your horse to do.  Side pass, haunches in, traverse, leads, etc. And this is "Western" I am speaking of.     Good luck.   Just keep to basic turn and think in your mind how to move horse away from pressure.
