I want to study to become a History teacher, what courses do I need to take this fall to get started? I am going to be in my first year of college this year and have decided that this is what I wish to study. I am looking into the classes early to see what I need to take. I would love any help that can be offered. Thank you.

  1. In Arizona, they start you off with 4 basic courses.  (2 three credit courses in Western Civilization and two three credit courses in U.S. History)  After that, you will take specialized courses in the area of interest to you.  (i.e. The Renaissance, The American Civil War, etc.)

To get an actual Bachelors in History, you will need to take about 50 hours or so.  I chose the easy way got my Bachelor's in Education with an emphasis on Social Studies.  (30 hours of History, Political Science combinations)  This made more sense because it would have taken me an extra year and a half majoring in history.

Find out what your state requires.  See an adviser at your local college or university.  Since there is not too much of a shortage of Social Studies teachers, the requirements  may be a bit tougher.

Good luck.  Don't just be a teacher...be a good one!   Thanks for joining the profession!

  2. Take secondary education classes. You will need these for your requirements. Take History classes as electives. Don't be too concerned with what classes, your advisors should let you know. Be more concerned with grade point average. That is what most schools look for. And make sure you can speak well and clearly for the interview process.
