We buy in liters, of course, but I paid the equivalent of $2.60 USD a gallon here in Mazatlan today.

Gas in the border area is approximately the same price as the same area in the United States. The government dictates this so that the money of the Mexicans will be spent in their country.

Gas in the interior is about 50 cents per gallon more.  Remember you are buying liters, and not gallons.
