there is a small movement of people who are making hydrogen converters that turn ordinary tap water into hydrogen gas and are able to power their cars off of it

  1. Well, the devices are harmless because they don't produce anywhere near enough hydrogen or oxygen to affect either the engine's performance or cause much of an explosion unless you really, really try to make one.

They're bogus at several levels.  One, they aren't really secret; anyone can make them.  Two, they don't do much of anything, as mentioned above.  Three, if they did produce much hydrogen, the engine would not like it much because hydrogen knocks badly in any modern engine, and four, it requires more energy from the car's engine (through the alternator belt) than you get back from recombining the hydrogen and oxygen.

  2. Hydrogen is a very dangerous gas. Look at the exhaust of your car. There is no spare oxygen so how is the hydrogen burn???

  3. -Hydrogen is flammable.

-Hydrogen is difficult to transport. It works its way into cracks in ordinary steel pipe.

    - Hydrogen is difficult to store. As a gas, its density is so low that a standard welding bottle of hydrogen at 2240 psi has only about as much energy as a half gallon of gasoline. To be reasonable for transportation, you need a very large tank under extremely high pressure. 5000 psi or more.

    - Hydrogen is difficult to deliver. Filling a fuel tank on your car with something at a pressure of 5000 psi is difficult.

  4. 2n222 is right

Have you ever watch Myth busters

They couldn'tg et the convertors to work and whn they fed the engine pure Hydrogen teh car starts and then blows up

  5. I believe the problem is carrying the nitrogen tank safely. Other than that it sounds like a good hybrid system, but energy consideration for production of hydrogen should be considered further.
