En marzo de 1861, cuando Lincoln tomó posesión de su cargo, Carolina del Sur, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana y Texas se constituyeron en los Estados Confederados de América con Jefferson Davis como presidente, proclamando su secesión de la Unión, acto que Lincoln declaró ilegal en su discurso inaugural.

    By the way, they are not two people, but only one: Robert Cavelier´s title was "Sieur de la Salle" and he died in 1687, so he couldn´t be alive in 1885 as someone says in the answer above. In this site, they say that Cavelier claimed for France all the territories drained by the Mississipi river in 1682; check it:
