  1. Home-schooled kids don't have a great prom.

  2. First off, let me say I respect all choices of education...and have been involved in all three:  public, private and homeschool.

Public school:  very up on fashion, trends,  a little over dependent on the opinions of others, typically have friends in their own age group, typically disregard teachers and adults in general as the enemy and younger kids as the plague

Private school:  a bit on the trendy side, has higher end accessories, dependent on their parents income so they don't dis them too badly, have friends in their social class and see teachers and adults as potential opportunities and younger kids as annoyances.

Home schooled: no trends, shared accessories... rarely dependent on the opinions of others, self motivated, typically have friends in every age group and every social class, regard adults in general as people...maybe even friends

No dead give away...sometimes a geek is just a geek.

  3. At a park it is easy!

Public elementary school: Most likely playing with kids of the same age/gender.

Homeschool elementary/middle: More likely to be playing in a group of kids of  various ages/genders.

  4. I don't think you can tell unless they tell you.

I work in public school and homeschool my son.  We have friends in public school, private school and homeschool.

Kids are kids.  They are all different.

  5. It really depends on the area and personal perceptions.

    One interesting insight I've heard:

At private schools, there is less pressure to be trendy. Sounds counterintuitive, right? Here's why. Since so many kids are wealthy enough to afford the in-demand items, they're no longer special. Even those not in the in-crowd can afford them. Thus, no chase, no obsessive pursuit.

  6. Private school: not a lot of regular clothes; used to uniforms and people that are like them.

    Public school: could be anyone.

Homeschool: long stringy hair, homemade dresses, cowboy boots, can't use a computer.

  7. As someone who used to teach at a private high school and had a kids who came from public, private and homeschool environments, I will say there were 2 big differences that I noticed. Homeschool kids related better to adults (and had no more problems relating to peers as anyone else...maybe better in the sense they were more secure in themselves). Also, my homeschool kids, on the whole, were harder workers and more conscientious. They had read more widely and knew history better, as well.

My son goes to public school, btw.

  8. I've generally found that homeschoolers tend to use less slang and don't usually complain as much about the work in classes; but the latter is probably because the homeschooled kid is probably doing it because he wanted to, whereas the school kids are trying to pad a transcript or are being forced in to it by their parents.

It's not like people don't have basic personalities, though. A close friend of mine has always gone to school, and she fits the geek profile better than I do. For example, I bathe regularly, brush my teeth twice a day, and always wear clean clothes. My friend tends to forget about these things when she gets too excited about building a new D&D character.

Then again, I'm a major nerd about things that require a bit more of an obsessive-compulsive personality. People who build computers -and/or design them for fun- are not the type to be okay with spilling root beer on their work.

  9. People who are home schooled are generally very "out of the loop" and often have an odd way of dressing.

Private school kids are more modest and conservative minded than average.

Public school kids are very with the trends and generally act crazier than private or home schooled kids.

  10. OK around here:

Public school: Dressed in red, blue, green, or purple polo style shirts and Khaki pants (our kids are in uniform in this parish). In need of a general attitude adjustment. Have very little respect for authority at all. Could care less about their educations. Very dependent on other PS kids opinions. I know these are generalizations but you asked.

Private school: Typical school uniforms. Less dependent on others opinions BUT still want their approval. Usually thinks they are better than Public students.

Home school: Wear any thing you want as long as it matches. Not as dependent on the latest trends. Doesn't know the new slang. Could care less about the new slang. Could care less about others opinions. Usually polite. they usually have a respect for authority ( at least they know if mom catches them talking back to a cop or who ever they would be smacked over). They biggest difference it that they are usually more mature, self driven, and responsible. They are very well adjusted to the real world. They are not adjusted to the faux world that the public schools and private schools set up. So therefore all the things that are important to Brick and Mortar schools are unimportant to most home schoolers (unless they have been in a B&M school for more than 4 years).

All of this is a generalization and some of it may just be my opinion but, I've been there and this is what I remember from High school.

  11. Home schooled people may not understand some of the slang words you use and also may not have as many friends..
