What are the details that led to the allied use of nuclear weapons (the atomic bomb) against Japan?

To win the war and come home. My Dad was in the Pacific, about to invade Japan at a horrible cost of lives on both sides. The Atomic bombs actually saved millions of lives.

it was determined that the Japanese would not surrender the home islands without a huge loss of life on both sides(millions) so we decided to end it as soon a possible.since the first one didn't convince them we dropped the second and they surrendered
