Trying to decide between a Michael Kelly Premium and Michael Kelly Limited. The EMGS are more expensive, does that make them hotter, or better?

  1. Hotter, yes. Better? Not necessarily.

I think I've already ranted on this in another question today, so I'll limit it to saying that they have a signature sound that kind've overtakes your guitar. If you like the sound, it'll probably work, if you don't, or you want a more unique tone, then don't get them.

Passive pickups tend to have more character then active ones. Actives ones are usually hotter than passive ones.

  2. EMG pickups are active pickups, and the Rockfield SWC's are passive pickups.  Active pickups tend to be hotter, but that's not a hard-and-fast rule.  Some people swear by EMGs, but others (like me) don't think they're the be-all-end-all that some guitar players make them out to be.  Just my two-cents worth:  I don't think it's going to make that much difference in your sound to get the Premium.  So if the pickups are the deciding factor, I'd get the Limited.
