To me they seem about the same-powerful motor, comfortable ride etc. Maybe not as much lean in the cruiser with out scraping pegs etc

  1. go check out a Yamaha FJR 1300 by far  one the finest Sport/Touring machine around.

Then you will see why elite riders prefer them to cruisers.

A sport/tourer is a bike with a sport bike motor, and a longer frame to be stable on the opne road.

You sit more upright, but not to the point of a crusier, which is laid back

  2. Cruisers are closer to the ground (usually), longer (usually), have a torquey engine, and are heavier with a feet forward sitting position. Your weight is centered on your rear end. Windshields and bags are optional.

Sports tourers have an upright riding position, which divides the weight between your legs and the rear. They are designed to be comfortable over long periods of time on the highway. They are more agile and usually have more horsepower. They come with windshields and removable bags.

  3. sport tours can be more powerful and and sleeker

  4. A 900cc cruiser putting out 80 bhp{bwahhahahahahaha}, don't think so.

sport tourer has more hp and a different design then a cruiser

  5. a picture is worth a 1000 words.

  6. It's all about torque.

I ride two Suzuki RF900's which is a sports tourer (not both at the same time LOL) and they are rated 135BHP whilst a similar cc (900) cruiser is around 60BHP (edited from 80 as 20/20 says 80 is incorrect)

Sports Tourers are much lighter than Cruisers and because of this are a lot faster with the RF900 capable of 160mph

  7. Ergonomics and performance.

The seating position of a cruiser is like riding a recliner.

The seating position of a sports tourer is leaned over in a crouched racing position like a sportbike, but a more up-rite relaxed position for long trips.

The steering geometry of a cruiser gives a slower reaction to quick sharp turns and fast switch-backs, as a sports tourer is set up like a sportbike, capable of race performance handling.

    The engines -

A cruiser is relaxed and is satisfied with low end torque.

A sports tourer screams of high RPMs and horse power.

A sports tourer is for people that want the performance of a spotbike and the comfort to ride long distances.
