  1. A Rasp has large grooves or scoop shaped holes in it and is used to take stock down to a rough shape or size.

    A File has small grooves in it and is used to smooth or reduce rough shaped stock.

    A hone is basically a sharpening stone and used to put a smooth finish on stock, or to sharpen a tool like a chisel or Knife.
