Question:

What are the differences between grapes?

I just got some grapes from a friend who grows them in her back yard. I have had them before, but, was wondering what kind they are? She did not plant them, so she didn't know. They are dark purple. I have always ate them by sucking out the inside and leaving the skin. I thought they were Concord, but, I read that Concord grapes come from New York and surrounding areas. I live in Illinois. Also, can you grow the red type of grapes you get in the grocery store in your back yard? Any info would ge great.

  1. The grapes your friend grows might be concord.  If they can grow in new York why can't they grow in Illinois.  There are quite a few varieties of grapes that you can grow yourself.  Depending on the severity of your winters some might not grow where you live.  A catalog from a mail order nursery should have several varieties to choose from with information about their winter hardiness.

Take a look at this site, it talks about growing grapes in your part of the world.......hope you find the answer.

  3. Are they seedless?  If so, they might be red flame.  There are many different variaties, so it is difficult to say with limited information.
