Mennonite settlement in Mexico began in 1922 following the granting of a ‘Privilegium’ (privileges) by the Mexican government. Colony and Sommerfield Mennonites from Manitoba and Saskatchewan were living in the Manitoba Colony (1922), Swift Current Colony (1922) and Santa Clara Colony (1922) in Chihuahua State. These groups had emigrated from Russia to Canada in the 1870s in response to offers of reserved homestead lands and privileges and immunities equivalent to those inherent in the ‘Privilegium’ held in Russia.

Over the years other Mennonite groups tried to settle in Mexico but most returned to the States or to Canada. Those remaining became part of the Old Colony Mennonites.

  1. Hi.   Here in Pennsylvania we both have Mennonites and Amish. I'm not sure about the Mennonites in Mexico, but in our area the main difference is that Amish don't drive and extremely rarely have electricity. The Mennonites are the opposite, they drive, have cars, and have modern am entities. The Mennonites as well the Amish both have a tight knit family and church system though.

I hope this helps.      justin byers

  2. In Mexico they speak Spanish and in Pennsylvania they speak English.

  3. The Amish broke away from the Mennonites while they were still in Switzerland. The Mennonites were becoming more "modern" while the Amish wanted to keep the old ways
