  1. A motor is a device that converts electricity or stored energy into directed kinetic energy. An engine is any device that processes and converts energy OR data. A machine is any  device that does anything to anything.

    Those are the technical definitions.

  2. MOTOR - A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power.

ENGINE- A machine that converts energy into mechanical force or motion.

MACHINE-A device consisting of fixed and moving parts that modifies mechanical energy and transmits it in a more useful form.

  3. motor in general terms, converts electrical energy to rotatory motion. your cpu fan is a dc motor, i.e. its fed with a dc voltage(about 5V).

engine uses fuel and does work. every locomotive has an engine to propel it forward(mechanical work).

machine is a general term referred to systems which do assigned functions. an engine is a machine.

  4. bottom line, there is a lot of overlap. Unless the context makes it clear, always specify which it is.
