  1. Both Women and African-American people are allowed to play golf back then they did not allow them to.

  2. back then  they  used wooden golf sticks that snapped when you hit the ball

  3. Watered fairways

    Better mowing machinery

Many different strains of grass developed for climate specific uses

Chemicals to assist in growing the right plants and grasses and eliminating the unwanted weeds and undergrowth

Bigger and better machinery to build golf courses

    Cart paths

    Community specific golf courses

  4. If you consider golf today, within in 3 miles of where I live there are some 15 golf courses. 100 years ago there were 2.

So golf was elitist and very Scottish. Today, golf is an everyman or woman or child game with very few barriers to entry into this magnificent sport. There are many types of club in the UK today, municipal pay and play across to private members clubs like Queen Wood with an entrance fee of £250K and then membership at £75K pa.

Golf is so different and yet so the same. 100 years ago, membership of a golf club was exclusive, today it is both.

  5. A lot if you play at the modern resort courses with their manicured fairways , massive greens and palatial clubhouses. However if you wish to see how golf was played originally go to the old course at St Andrews. Little has changed over100 years.  On Sunday the course still reverts back to being a park and everyone can stroll on it including your pets. When you stand on the swilken bridge you can imagine all the famous golfers who walked across the bridge before you.

  6. The grass was different. The greens weren't as short or as generalized as they are today. There were bumps all over them and shorter and longer grass. This made it tougher to read. But the game is different nowadays but in a better way. You just have to understand modern mowing, irrigation, airration, and seeding has changed the conditions dramatically from long ago but you and your buddy putt on the same green together, you hit the same rough and the same fairways. The game is still level as long as you compete on the same course together.
