  1. Red clay has a lot of iron in it. The difference is not so much what the soil particles contain, as it is how the nutrients are absorbed by the different soils. Sandy or loamy soil drains rapidly, The particles in clay are fine, retaining moisture at the roots that allows the plant to absorb the nutrients in the soil during water intake. Some plants don't like clay - the roots rot from the lack of drainage. You can address this by adding compost or peat to the clay and tilling. Any amendments to the soil will stay longer in clay than in sand -- it makes sense that water would wash away more of the nutrients in sandy soil.
