  1. Coughing is a reflex action, designed to get your lungs and trachea free of interfering and irritating objects.

    Normally, the cilia in the trachea prevent foreign objects from entering the lungs, by driving them to the throat and allowing them to be swallowed or spat out. If a foreign object gets past them, however, the body tries to prevent damage to the tender lung tissue by initiating the cough reflex. The force of air driving up through the trachea is frequently enough to drive the object out. However, due to the irritation, coughing can continue for a bit after the object is expelled.
