  1. There are no floats in swimming. Swimming is propulsive and you move through the water while doing it.

    Floating is not propulsive and you stay in one spot. You can float on your front side or your backside, it doesn't take the imagination of a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

    Your ability to float is dependent on your body density. Water has a density of ONE gram per cubic centimeter (g/cc). Anything with a greater density (metal) than one sinks and anything with a lower density (wood) floats.

    A normal human body with normal amounts of body fat has a density of 1.01 g/cc. If you have excess fat then your density becomes less than 1 and you float.
