There are light microscopes, i.e. Brightfield, good to see dead stained cells, Darkfield, good for external details of living cells, Phase/Contrast, good for internal details of living cells (also can project onto a TV, very cool), and Fluorescent, which uses UV light to view dead stained cells, often used in medical diagnosis.

    Then there are electron microscopes which use beams of electrons, i.e. Scanning Electron, which is to view dead stained cells (external detail) at 10,000 magnification, and Transmission Electron, to view internal detail of dead cells, at 100,000 magnification.  Wow, I would love to get a chance to use one of those.

    Of course, there are others, but these are pretty common.

  3. Typically, there is an optical microscope and an electron microscope. Optical magnifies like 400x the original size, whereas electron gives you a MUCH more magnified image.
