What's

OH

DS

MB

L

RH

S

RS?

What are the roles of each position and how does a coach decide who to put in these positions?

Would any of the positions be more "desirable" than the others?

  1. OH - outside hitter. I personally think it's the best spot to spike. Coaches look for someone who's tall, strong, and bit skilled than among the hitters/front row players

DS - defense specialist. plays defense!! duhh! haha~ they are REALLY good at passing the ball to the target, meaning SETTER! Theyre usually short. Not to generalize or anything but most of time yea..

MB - middle blocker. MB is tall, good hitter, and a blocker. The MB can move left and right side while blocking so they want a good blocker for the MB. You gotta work on jumpin!

L - libero. a special defense player, they can sub in without the whistle. ANYTIME the coach desires

RH - right side hitter, personally, the worst spot to play in. You sort of get the "left over" or like "omg it's gonna be out but it's already been touched by first person so i must go get it!" lol. The setter usually back sets to the RH, so it's a difficult approach. well, for me it is.

S - setter. She is like a quarterback. She sets up for the hitters.

If youre a freshmen, youre most likely to try out each position to see which is your strongest and the weakest. Every position is very important cause vball is a TRUE 100% team work sport! I dont really know whats more desirable. As long as you like your position and youre good at it

  2. OH - outside hitter. this person is in the front left of the court, and hits, blocks, and takes short balls. a coach looks for someone reletively tall, who can hit and block.

DS - defense specialist. someone who is very quick, and extremely good at passing. a DS plays back row, and needs to get a pass off of anything.

MB - middle blocker. this person is usually the tallest, and attacks as well as blocks.

L - libero. a special defense player, who can only play back row, and subs in at anytime to pass.

RH - right side hitter, this is the same as an outside, only on the back of the setter.

S - setter, this is the player who always has second ball, and is extremely loud, fast, and great with their hands.

its up to you which position appeals to you the most, im tall and i perfer to hit, so i play middle front, as well as DS. being put in a position depends on your personal skills as a player, so if you're really good at passing; you're probably going to be a DS or libero. etc.

  3. OH-outside hitter, either left side or right side, some coaches only mean left side

DS-defensive specialist, plays only back row

MB-middle blocker, plays in the middle front on offense

L-Libero-defensive specialist  the extreme, plays only back row all the time

RH-right side hitter or weak side hitter, plays on the right side of the offense

S-Setter, player that sets every second ball to get to the hitters, in control of the offense

RS-right side, same as RH, plays on the right side on offense

If you are quick and like to be in control, try for setter.  If you love passing and serving only, go for L or DS.  If you love hitting the ball and getting all the glory, go for OH.  If you love the combo of offense and defense, go for the right side hitter.  You will get to hit and you will possibly be blocking the best hitter of the other team.
