  1. I believe the main two ways that it breaks down is whether the dominant, imperial culture is being embraced or forced upon the weaker, subordinate culture -- whether they are seen as "occupiers" or "liberators".  It can refer to either the forced acculturation of a subject population, or to the voluntary embracing of a foreign culture by individuals who do so of their own free will.

With the negative connotations of "imperialism" one tends to think of the former:  of populations being forced to use a foreign language, to practice foreign religions, etc.  But it doesn't have to be forceful.

Take Hollywood movies and television, for example.  The studios make their money with the domestic market, and sell them on the cheap internationally.  With their high production values and low costs, foreign productions can't compete, and the American-centric viewpoint of those Hollywood movies spreads into foreign cultures.
