Most specialties in scientific fields focus on a methodology, a specific region or time, or some other thematic premise.  Archaeology is no exception.

Thus you'll see some archaeologists who specialize only in the study of how things decay (taphology), the works of Egypt (Egyptology), only on the time before written records (prehistoric archaeology), or only through the use of satellite photographs (aerial archaeology).

Basically, the subfields are almost as numerous as different names you could possibly think of or the number of different people studying it.  Like anything, you find some part you like and work on that!
