  1. Flooding results in disease outbreaks for a couple of reasons.

First, even in developed countries, it will result in untreated sewage being spread around because of treatment plants being flooded and sewage mains backing up. f***s from an ill person will often contain bacteria or viruses which will result in the disease being contracted by people drinking contaminated water. While the risks of becoming ill is less, just coming into direct contact with the contaminated water is potentially hazardous, as is breathing in dust after the flood waters have subsided and things have dried out a bit.

The second reason floods cause disease is because of people and animals dying, not being buried or burned and instead rotting in water which, again, might be drunk by people because there is no other source of water.

There are other diseases associated with flooding, but cholera and typhoid are the classic killers.

The World Health Organisation has a good fact sheet covering the basics. The Wikipedia article on water-borne diseases might also be helpful to you.
