  1. Basically, a diode allows the flow of current in only one direction. The different types of diodes are as follows. Please see links below for more details:

    Avalanche diodes

    Cat’s whisker or crystal diodes

    Constant current diodes

    Esaki or tunnel diodes

    Gunn diodes

    Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)

    Laser diodes

    Peltier diodes

    Photodiodes

    Point-contact diodes

    PIN diodes

    Schottky diodes

    Super Barrier Diodes

    Gold-doped” diodes

    Snap-off or Step recovery diodes

    Transient voltage suppression diode (TVS)

    Varicap or varactor diodes

    Zener diodes

Some applications for diodes are as follows:

    Radio demodulation

    Power conversion

    Over-voltage protection

    Logic gates

    Ionising radiation detectors

    Temperature measuring

    Current steering

  2. The diode allows current to pass through one direction. It is always used to convert A.C to D.C(rectifying). It also allows current only when a specific amount of voltage is applied(0.3,0.7). So it can be used as a switch also.

The operations of diodes are already stated by the above guy!!!!!!!!!
