similarities:

both utterly devastated Europe

both had relatively late US involvement

both involved implementation of new fighting techniques (fighter jets, mustard gas, A-bomb)

both had devastating troop losses

both involved extensive nationalism and propaganda on all sides

differences:

aftermath of 2nd world war was handled much better than the 1st (that's why there was no wwiii)

2nd involved Asia

2nd set the stage for the Cold War

there was a particular moment in time that we can point to that started wwi.  wwii was more of a response to Hitler's invasions.
