Well this is exactly what has happened in the US over these last years.    People are losing factory jobs to machines, which is making it imperative that people go on to higher education, which forces many of them to take out loans which they then have to repay. Keep in mind these are government subsidized loans, so the government is getting more money from it's citizens from it.  

    The industrial age has really hurt us in the long run.

Well Thomas Carlyle wrote Past and Present (1843), where he compared the lives of a medieval abbot and a 19th century man and concluded that Britain needed to turn away from the machines and instead summon up the spirit of the Christian Century's of the middle ages. Carlyle believed that communal values were collapsing under isolating individualism and laissez faire capitalism as the modern machine threatens to dehumanize society.
