  1. 90% of the time they are a complete waste of time that can be otherwise used for study or physical activity.  (When was the last time you experienced actual reality?)

Depending upon the game and with moderate use some benefits can be obtained.

With newer accelerometer based controls like in the Nintendo Wii games can be used in a physical therapy application as a means of giving feed back to a range of motion.    The commercial shows senior citizens doing virtual bowling where they may otherwise be incapable of lifting a real bowling ball. They  can continue to perform a range of motion similar to bowling which they otherwise would not be likely to perfom because of physical strenght or grip issues..

Games can help develope critical and logical thinking,  provide conceptual training ( MS Flight simulator for example), model economic systems (Sim_City), and pass on historical information (WW2 battles)

Would I want to study for a history exam by playing "Call of Duty", h**l No.  However the game uses historical information such as names and locations of famous battles, type of weapons etc. This can supliment and foster and interest in historical information and just might give some incentive for an indivdual to learm more about that historical period.

There are positive and negative social effects.

Games can provide a social outlet where interaction with others can be fostered.  Having friends over to play "Rock Band" or having a topical discussion about a game with others.  Games can also isolate and reduce social interaction with others if an individual gets wrapped up in a game. Ever see someone  playing a personal game in room full of people, heaven forbid that individual actually talk to someone.  Nothing kills the development of the art of  starting a conversation more than a video game.

Games can be addictive there certainly are reinforcements to continued playing. Your heart rate increases, you can get a sense of euphoria when a task in a game is completed and you advance a level, and the  sensory reinforcements designed to enhance the game just keep you comming back for more.  Your not going to go into withdrawal like a heroin junkie but games can certainly draw you in and keep your attention from other activities about as effectively as a slot machine occupies the attention of a gambler.

Like anything too much of a good thing is bad and moderation is the key.
