Cancer is one of them, in which membrane proteins serve as recognition codes. A cell realizes it is right next to another cell by detecting the recognition protein in the membrane. But In cancer, there is a failiure to respond to the proteins and they remain undetected and therefore cells keep dividing, thinking that they have no other cells next to them and that they need to fill in that empty space by replicating.
