What are the dolls called that are made to look like your child?

When I was little my best friend had a doll that her mom special ordered from somewhere that she sent a picture too and they sent a doll back that looked exactly like my friend! Now I want to get one for my little cousin and I can't find out what they are! They aren't porclein though! You can play with them just like a real doll! Can anyone help me?
