I am going on a Norwegian Cruise and I have tried to look up info, but i really can't find anything related to drinking age restrictions. I was wondering if it's 18? And also, how strict is it?

  1. I know the NCL website can be hard to navigate.  Nonetheless, here is the information you are looking for ...

With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, (Where you must be 21 years of age to consume or purchase alcohol of any kind) NCL permits guests between the ages of eighteen (18) and twenty (20) to purchase and personally consume wine and beer while on NCL ships with the consent of an accompanying parent or legal guardian on the same sailing once the vessel is outside the US state territorial waters (3 miles out). Complete details and special consent form are only available onboard at the Reception Desk. *If you want to gamble in our casinos, you must have a valid ID showing you are 18 years or older. If a guest under the age of 18 wins in the casino and can not provide proof of age, he or she will not be paid the winnings. There are no casinos on our ships in Hawaii.

    * NCL encourages the responsible use of alcohol and accordingly reserves the right to permanently or temporarily revoke the drinking privileges of any guest who violates NCL's Guest Code of Conduct or who is deemed a danger to himself, herself or others by vessel management. Continued abuse of alcohol while sailing and/or violation of NCL's alcohol policy may result in immediate disembarkation.

  2. You have to be 21 or older to drink on almost all cruise lines.  Your cruise card will indicate your age, so there's no getting past the restriction.  Your parents could buy you a drink, of course....

  3. The minimum drinking age on ALL cruise lines, including NCL, is age 21 and older.  And yes, the cruise lines do enforce it strictly.  One of the ways is that the cruise card that you will be issued when you check in at the pier will identify you as under age 21 and the bar tenders and servers will then not bring you ANY alcoholic beverages.  And it does not matter that you may be in international waters or parked in a foreign port.  The policy is still the same.

But, the good news is that you CAN drink alcoholic beverages in almost every port that you stop at in cafes, bars and restaurants.  So go tank it up there.

And no you cannot bring your own alcohol on ships as that is also prohibited; and even in port stops you cannot buy alcohol to bring back to your cabin.  If you do buy any it will be confiscated and held for you until the last day of the cruise (the morning that you get off the ship.

I don't know what cruise line you are going on but the no alcohol policy is spelled out on each at some place.

  4. It appears from recent articles I found on line that most of the better cruise companies have changed their policies and now will not servce minors alcohol, also you are not allowed to bring your own alcohol on board.  There have been many instances of rape, alcohol poisoning and other events to make cruise ships take a look at themself.  While Norwegian Cruises is not listed in this website, many of the other cruise lines are.  Enjoy your holiday alcohol free.
