Hi, I'm fourteen years old and I'm turning fifteen in November. My school doesn't offer driver's ed so I'm not exactly sure how it works. When can I start classes? When do I get my permit? How many hours do I have to drive with a parent? Also, for those living in Illinois, if you could recommend a driving school, I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you. :)

  1. Illinois

    Learning Permit Age: 15

    Restricted License: 16

    Full License: 18

Driver's Ed Req: Yes (50 hours)

Additional Restrictions: No cell phone usage under 18 unless in an emergency situation.

  2. Go to one of your local Department of Motor Vehicle offices (or Illinois equiv.)  Pick up a copy of the Driver's Handbook.  In most states, this is free.  Study up on it to help prepare you to take the written exam.  You will not be able to get behind the wheel of ANY vehicle, not even a driver training car, until you pass a written test.

This handbook will also have the answers to most of your other questions.
