  1. In an offical game, there are people who:

    - Ref. above the net

    - Ref. below the net (opposite the up-ref.)

    - Keep track of the Libero's

    - Do general book keeping

    - Keep track of the score so the players and spectators can see it

    - And line judge.

Every referee is important, especially in a game as brutally organized as volleyball.

  2. The first referee R1 is on the stand.  The R1 has complete control of the match and can overrule anyone.  The primary duties of the R1 are the ball handling calls and discipline.

The second referee R2 is on the floor in front of the benches.  The R2 controls everything on the bench side of the court.  The time outs, substitutions and questions from the benches are the duties of the R2.  The R2 mainly watches the area between the 3 meter lines (10 foot lines) and the net.

Their is probably going to be a third referee in NCAA D1 playoff matches.  They are going to reverse the court assignments for TV and playoffs.  The R1 is going to be on the bench side of the court and still call ball handling.  The R2 is going to watch between the 3 meter lines.  The third referee will sit behind the R1 and handle subs and questions from the benches.  I have not heard if this is official yet, but it probably will be.  They have done it for some matches in the past.

The line judges LJ are in the corners of the court on the floor.  Most of the time, there will be 2 LJ's.  They are to the right of the officials.  (And cross court to the left)  Their duties include calling the ball in or out, calling touches on any player, and line or antenna faults.

The scorekeeper keeps track of the official score of the match.  They will keep track of the substitutions.

The assistant scorekeeper keeps track of the Libero and substitutions.

The visible scorekeeper does the scoreboard.

  3. The Referee is on the stand and runs the game, the referee calls all contact fouls and runs the whistle for the game

The Umpire is opposite the ref and in front of the bench's, the umpire handles the table for substitutions and calls net contact, the umpire should mirror the Ref's call so the table may see the call clearly

Line Judges work the lines side line and end line-  The referee can over ride the Line Judges

Scorer is at the table and keeps the book for subs and score, works closely with the umpire

Good Luck its a lot of fun

  4. um...call the game
