Think bodyparts.  Before anybody was too worried about measuring distances with absolute precision, every adult was equipped with various measuring devices.  The length of  a foot is based upon the length of a man's foot, a yard is three feet because a stride has a length similar to three feet, a cubit is the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, a hand -a mesaurement used for horses- is the width of the hand.
