Depends on what kind of food. The easiest way is to freeze it. Just buy some good freezer bags and put it in the freezer. You can't freeze everything though.

You can also dry the food, use a home canner and can it, or just eat it fast.

I make all sorts of things for dinner and make extra and put it in those new Ziplock vaccuum seal freezer bags.  I make taco meat and rice and freeze that, I make spaghetti sauce with meat and many other things.  But when I make lasagna I will make 2 trays and put one in a glass pyrex and cover really good and put in freezer.  Luckily I have an extra freezer, I always have something for dinner because of that!
