This is an excellent question, and there are no easy answers. While, for example, Buddhism generally discourages the use of intoxicants (one of the first 8 precepts taken by a follower), certain sects of Hinduism do not necessarily proscribe it (e.g. Tantric followers of the God Siva use cannabis to go deep within, and loosen the bonds of attachment to name and form).

Ultimately, the answer is a personal one. And it is both circumstance and age related. Cannabis "softens boundaries" and one of those boundaries is your sense of self. The age old question "WHO AM I" is at the core of any serious spiritual endeavor. Since we usually believe that we are our bodies, cannabis may help one to question that assumption, by shifting our viewpoint. Are we are bodies, which change continuously? How do I define my body? Is my definition based on sensation: hearing, seeing, feeling, etc. How real are sensations? Cannabis can be a tool in this self-inquiry. However, I would say that until you have a strong spiritual practice, and then are taught how to use cannabis as a sacrament by a serious guide, you would pretty much be flying by the seat of your pants.

As far as age goes, I would say it would be a pretty good idea to have already developed a strong sense of self and purpose before you  go on to its deconstruction. (Notice, I did not say, "destruction". Deconstruction is a matter of taking something apart so you understand its workings a little better, and have the knowledge necessary to rebuild it in a more powerful way.)

Now, if  you were asking about using cannabis just to get high, or relax we might look at it a little differently: Using cannabis as recreation can be as much of a distraction as television, so to take all the moralistic viewpoints out of the equation, you might simply ask yourself, what are the effects of television on your spiritual life? The answer would be about the same.
