What are the effects of spent nuclear fuel on the body?

Question

Using you were to stand in a room with unshielded spent nuclear fuel, what would happen? Or actually what is a site describing the effects? I know death is the obvious result, but I need to back that up from somewhere.

I think the answer you seek is if I were to survive a radiation exposure what would my symptoms be....radiation sickness (exposure can be as little as a sun burn or as harsh as your skin sluffing off).
