  2. Some countries are very poor and rely on wood for fuel to cook with. I  lived in Haiti for a few years and saw a special on Jacques Cousteau. It's not just because trees are cut down for making charcoal to cook on (I believe they were also cut down  to create plantations, and mahogany wood was transported to Europe during colonialism), but the results on the environment on that part of the island of Hispaniola are the following:

    1. The climate has changed. There is now not as much rain and it is dryer.

    2. Lack of trees has caused erosion. There is now very little top soil and this effects growing crops for food.

    3. The soil has washed down from the mountains into the rivers and oceans because there were fewer trees to hold it back. As a result, coral in the Caribbean Sea off these coasts are dying and diminishing. As the coral dies, the fish and other sea life that depend on it also diminish.

If you look at the Dominican Republic where they have more resources to enforce laws and more access to buying other sources of cooking fuel than wood, you will see that the two countries are completely different. It is rather depressing.

  3. I think the last few answers summed it up....i agree with them.

we need to harvest trees in some places and we need to plant more in places that the climate is more dependant on the trees than the trees on the climate...sounds weird but its true...so the wood that we dont use (waste!) in every day building, pulping, chipping whatever its used for should be lumbered from harvested trees that are replaced with maybe another two newly planted ones...so

wastage of wood shouldnt be as big a problem nowadays if its harvested on a good system.

if you discard any significant amounts of timber these days, there are places you can take it to,to be re-cyled into stuff like wood pulp for makeing re-cycled tissue paper or paper itself.

  4. there won't be alot of trees left which means not alot of oxygen!! Without alot of oxygen it could harm the earth!
