  5. Annexation of the Philippines was done in late 1800's and early 1900's primarily as a means to protect it from China and Japanese expansion.  This was after USA defeated Spain and gained possession of the Philippines in a peace treaty with Spain.  Revolutionaries led by Emilio Aquinaldo had hoped that American victory over Spain would bring independence to Phils.  However US sent troops to Phils and Aguinaldo then rebelled against the US.  This went on for 3 years and cost the USA more than the Spanish-American war did to start with.  Most Americans disagreed with the annexation because it went against our beliefs in liberty.

In 1934 the US promised Phils complete independence.  Then came the Japanese in early 1940's.  US forces were fighting enemies in Europe and later returned to rout out the Japanese from Phils when Macarthur returned in 1944.

After that the US had a military presence there but The Philippines was self governing since then.  Up until recent years.
