Culture defines what the roles of each gender are in the marriage and how they are supposed to interact.  In current American society, it is assumed that the husband and wife are to be pretty much equal in the shared power of the relationship, but it is still common for the man to assume the role of financial and business decision maker and rule enforcer while the woman is the home-maker.  Other cultures see the roles of each gender much differently, typically with the role of the woman as a submissive to the dominant male. This is reinforced by religious and historical influences of the particular culture you are looking at.

Culture affects marriage  in such a huge way. No matter how liberal you think you are, when two different cultures are joined, huge sacrifices Have to be made. Lets say you are American and your spouse is of a different culture, well u can just wave goodbye to your Sundays b/c thats when THEY conjoin usually for family dinners and such. Good Luck Buddy.
