I've already got the jacket, gloves and trousers. I will be hiring snowboarding equipment such as the boots and board.

I am a complete beginner and i'm not sure which additional equipment i need to get.

I will definitely buy goggles. What about elbow and knee pads? Helmets? wrist guards? any others i haven't thought of?

  1. If you have high quality snowboarding pants and gloves, they won't be getting wet all the way through and you won't need spares. If you have lower quality stuff you might be soaked half way through the day.

    - Yes, goggles or sunglasses

    - Helmet (or hat)

    - Wrist guards are a good idea when learning

    - Synthetic Underwear (NOT cotton) - Duofold, Hot Chilis, etc.

       - Top and Bottom

    - Good synthetic socks (NOT cotton) - Thorlo, etc. These and the synthetic underwear will be worth the money and will keep you dry

    - Mid layer, cotton hoodie is OK but a fleece is better

    - Sunscreen / chapstick

I have heard of the "padded shorts" to pad the butt, but have never heard of anyone snowboarding with knee or elbow pads. It isn't ideal to learn on really hard snow / ice anyway, try to pick a day that has loose skier packed and groomed snow.

Learn how to fall - to your forarms when falling forward and to one side of the butt when falling backward and roll. NEVER try to stop a fall with your hands as your wrists are the most likely injury and you will be OK. Have fun learning and don't give up.

    Good Luck

  2. Knee pads are a must, speaking from experience. Elbow pads? Never needed them.

They sell these trouser/shorts that are padded in the right places that look good, but they cost ALOT so I've never used them.

I use a pair of volleyball kneepads with velcro, so I can take them off without removing my boots.

A helmet would be a good idea, too, but you might be able to rent one from the place you get your board. i wouldn't buy one if possibile, at least not until you decide you want to continue with the sport.

  3. Ehh   ya dont need kneepads dude>  Get yourself a helemt and your all set.    Maybe an extra pair of gloves. And thermals.

  4. Elbow pads are pretty unnecessary.  The knee pads might be nice but aren't mission critical.  One set of pads that I would recommend is wrist guards.  It's instinct to stick your hands out when falling and wrists are the most common injury.

Definitely hook up the helmet.  You may not fall on your head but better safe than sorry.

Make sure you're not wearing (much) cotton - you want your base layer to be something that will wick the sweat away and provide warmth, which cotton doesn't do when it's wet.  Wear a few pairs of pants because you might be spending some time sitting in the snow.  As long as your base layer is wicking and your outer layer is good and waterproof you should be fine with some sweatpants, but fleece are better if you can find them.

  5. I just use a helmet and goggles besides what you already mentioned. I DEFINATLEY reccomend wearing underarmour pants and top and layers. I usually wear underarmor pants, warm sweatpants/pj pants, snowpants, underarmour top (long sleeved), light zip up jacket (if very cold), sweatshirt, and a winter jacket. I also wear a ski mask to keep my face warm and a helmet and goggles. Good luck and have fun!!

  6. I just started snowboarding, and I find the best things to wear are....

    A waterproof winter jacket

Maybe a north face like jacket or microfiber zipup underneath

A short sleeve shirt underneath that

    Snowpants

Underarmor like pants underneath those or long underwear

ONE PAIR OF SOCKS (like smartwool, those are awesome)

your boots, snowboard, goggles, and helmet (you don't need a hat underneath the helmet, they are generally very warm. i reccomend a helmet when starting very very much!)

goggles aren't really an essential at the start but if you really get into it, they are very nice to have.

good luck, and you must promise me that you have to go atleast 3 times without saying I don't want to do this. The first day will be rough but the 2nd you will see so much improvement and before long you will be carving.
